그리고 1년뒤인 1974년 어두운 밤길을 운전하던 퍼서는 차량의 원인불명의 고장으로 인해 근처에 있던 제방을 들이받고 그토록 사랑하던 아내의 곁으로 떠나갔다. 

유족들은 퍼서의 사망원인이 조직폭력단과 연관되어있다고 이야기했지만 관련된 증거가 나오지 않아 유족들의 주장은 받아들여지지 않았다.

이후 카운티의 주민들은 퍼서를 기리는 추모관을 설립하였고 그의 이야기는 전설로 남게 되었다.

Buford Hayse Pusser (December 12, 1937 – August 21, 1974) was the Sheriff of McNairy County, Tennessee, from 1964 to 1970. Pusser is known for his virtual one-man war on moonshining, prostitution, gambling, and othervices along the Mississippi–Tennessee state line. His efforts have inspired several books, songs,^[1] movies, and a TV series. He was a wrestler known as "Buford the Bull" in the Mid-South.

The Buford Pusser Museum^[2] was established at his home he lived in at the time of his death in 1974. A Buford Pusser Festival is held each May in his hometown of Adamsville, Tennessee.
